How to reach Rishikesh

Located in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India, it is known as the ‘Gateway to the Himalayas’ and the ‘Yoga Capital of the World’. Rishikesh is surrounded by three districts: Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal and Haridwar.

By Air

The nearest airport to Rishikesh is Jolly Grant at Dehradun. The distance is approximately 35 km far. Many carriers have daily flights from New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport.

By Train

If you are making your journey to Rishikesh by train you will need to think about your tickets in advance (1-2 month before the departure). It is advisable to take the train till Haridwar (the nearest railhead to Rishikesh is in Haridwar) which is approximately 25 kilometres far from Rishikesh. Most popular trains are Mussoorie Express, Shatabadi Express, AC Special Express, Jan Shatabdi. In Haridwar you can take a bus or hire a taxi to Rishikesh.

By Bus

Rishikesh has a good network of buses connecting it with important places such as Haridwar, Dehradun and New Delhi. Buses depart in the morning and late evening from the Kashmere Gate ISBT, New Delhi for Rishikesh every day. You have options from a regular, deluxe or a luxurious coach. A bus journey will take approximately 6-8 hours depending on traffic conditions.

By Taxi

To take a taxi from Delhi airport to Rishikesh is a good option specially for foreign tourists who are traveling to India for the first time. It’s a 6 to 7 hours journey. But you should be very careful in choosing a taxi as many cheaters are waiting there for the tourists.
